Our Story

I came home and rediscovered what hospitality means.

The best stays aren't created by more technology. They're created by thoughtful hosts who understand the small details that make a person feel genuinely welcome. Kenova exists to help that care travel further.

It always felt like home

I was born in Vancouver, to Croatian parents. But Dubrovnik was always home in the way that matters most — I came back almost every year to see family, and the place worked its way into me one summer at a time. It never really felt like visiting. It felt like returning.

So when it came time to decide where to build a life, my wife and I made the move here with our kids. I finally came home for good. And I've never stopped seeing this coast from two sides at once — as someone who belongs to it, and as someone who once arrived from far away. That double view turned out to be the whole reason Kenova exists.

Where I first felt it

I didn't come to hospitality by hosting. I came to it as a guest.

As a teenager I started visiting on my own, and every time, my family and friends here took me in. They didn't just give me a bed. They took me to the places locals actually go, told me what to see and when, made sure I never felt lost in a city I didn't fully know yet. They cared — and it turned every visit into something I still remember.

That feeling — of being quietly taken care of by someone who knows the place — is what great hospitality has always been. Long before there was an app for anything. It's the feeling I wanted every guest, in every home, to have.

The problem wasn't effort. It was friction.

Here's what surprised me: the hosts I met weren't lazy or careless. Just the opposite. They cared enormously. They'd answer the same questions a hundred times, leave handwritten notes, print maps, keep a binder by the door thick with everything they'd learned.

The care was never the problem. The problem was that all of it lived in scattered places — a message here, a note there, a binder a guest might never open. So much intention, and so much of it lost in the gap between what the host knew and what the guest actually experienced.

That gap is the thing I couldn't stop thinking about.

The idea behind Kenova

Kenova started as a simple question: what if everything a thoughtful host knows could reach every guest, effortlessly — before the questions even come up?

Not a replacement for the host. An extension of them. One beautifully designed Welcome Guide that holds arrival details, house instructions, and the local recommendations only a real host could give — all in one link a guest can open anytime, on any phone, no app to download.

Ready in under 24 hours. So the care you already put in finally lands the way you intended.

The binder was never the problem

I want to be clear about the binder, because I love the binder.

For years it was the symbol of a host who cared. Someone sat down and wrote out everything a guest might need, because they wanted the stay to go well. That instinct is beautiful, and it's exactly what we're building around.

The binder represented care. Kenova just helps that care travel further — into the way people actually travel today.

Retire the binder. Keep the hospitality.

Why the name Kenova?

In Dubrovnik, people greet each other with an expression: “Đe si, kenova?” — roughly, “Where are you? What's new?” It's the sound of a city built on people knowing people. A small, warm moment of connection.

That's what this is really about. Not software. The human connection behind a great stay — a host sharing what they know, so a guest feels at home somewhere new.

Kenova — what's new from someone who knows.

What we believe

We believe hospitality is the details.

We believe the best technology is the kind you never notice — it just makes the welcome feel effortless.

We believe a destination isn't discovered through information. It's discovered through connection.

We believe a host's knowledge is worth more than any search result, because it comes from someone who actually lives there.

What we're building

Kenova is a young company, and we're building it deliberately — starting in the place that inspired it, with a small group of hosts who care about getting the welcome right.

We're not trying to be everything. We're trying to make one thing feel genuinely thoughtful: the moment a guest arrives and realises they have everything they need.

Right now I'm preparing my own short-stay apartment here in Dubrovnik — and Kenova is the welcome I'm building it around from day one. I'll be our first host, which means I'm not asking anything of you that I'm not building for myself, at the same time, from the same starting line.

Looking forward

The way people travel keeps changing. What makes them feel welcome doesn't.

Our hope is simple: that hosting feels a little lighter, that guests feel a little more at home, and that the care hosts have always given finally reaches every person who walks through the door.

If that's the kind of host you are, we'd love for you to be part of the beginning.

Create effortless hospitality.

Welcome guests the way you always wanted to.
